Neuropsychology
Reports

Neuropsychology expert witness reports provide a diagnostic assessment and management opinion on an individual's organic or neurocognitive deficits and the impact of these deficits on their daily living and decision-making.

Examples of the requirement for these expert witness reports include traumatic and acquired brain injury, neurodevelopmental disorders, or other conditions such as those relating to illness caused by medical examination or treatment affecting cognitive abilities.

Neuropsychology reports, through the appropriate lines of enquiry/clinical testing, outline the individual's cognitive profile, including attention, memory, language, visuospatial skills, and executive functioning, offering a thorough analysis to provide a comprehensive and informative opinion to the Court.

Expert Neuropsychological Assessments

Brain injuries and neurological conditions can profoundly impact cognitive functioning, behaviour, and overall quality of life. Accurate neuropsychological evaluation is critical for developing effective treatment plans and securing appropriate therapies and support services.

The Mental Capacity Act (2005) is designed to empower and protect individuals who may be unable to make decisions due to issues affecting how their mind or brain functions, such as illness or disability.

At Bush & Co, our highly qualified neuropsychology experts provide mental capacity assessments using the latest evidence-based methods to provide in-depth prognosis reports that articulate a person's decision-making ability, identifying impairment but also recognising that a lack of capacity may not be a permanent condition or impact all decision-making.

Louise Birkett-Swan

Neuropsychology Expert Witness

Louise has been working in neuropsychological rehabilitation since 1998, initially focusing on post-acute brain injury rehabilitation services and later expanding her experience to include community neurorehabilitation for individuals with brain injuries, as well as community residential rehabilitation. In addition, she has also worked within progressive neurological services and led the local NHS service responsible for neuropsychological assessments for individuals without acquired brain injuries.

In her NHS practice, Louise leads neuropsychological assessment and psychological support across services for memory assessment and younger persons with dementia. She has been involved in service development and national and local policy development related to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia provision, challenging behaviour, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), and the Mental Capacity Act. Furthermore, she has provided teaching related to brain injury and its impact on professionals and service users and carers.

Louise's roles generally include clinical interventions, such as direct one-on-one psychological interventions for mood-related disorders, as well as implementing, training, and monitoring the use of cognitive interventions. She also provides leadership, actively listening to the views of the team and providing essential information when planning and developing services and interventions. Training is a critical element in the learning process, particularly when working with individuals who have sustained an acquired brain injury, and Louise has been involved in the training and development of staff and individuals working within the area of brain injury rehabilitation since 1999.

In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Louise also provides consultancy and advice, which can be of value for a range of individuals from rehabilitation assistants to professionals in other services. Recognising research as a key component in increasing the quality of rehabilitation and care, Louise has published papers and presented at national and international conferences to audiences of neuropsychologists and members of multidisciplinary teams.

In the current financial climate, all services are required to demonstrate effective outcomes. Louise has been significantly involved in establishing the use of outcome-related tools, both in their development and implementation. She has experience training teams in using various resources, as well as in collecting, collating data, and presenting results.
